Last days in Vietnam
No voy a entrar en detalles sobre todo lo que hice durante los cuatro días que duró el Salón. Lo resumiré en "estuve trabajando", lo cual (no me seais maliciosos) no significa exactamente "me multipliqué en tropecientos seguratas para amargar a los pobres frikis". El trabajo en sí, aparte de estresante es, poco aburrido. Es repetitivo, sí, pero no aburrido. Incluye labores de secretario, guardaespaldas y, si no yo no lo haría bien, chico de los recados...
Salir a comer
Como no eramos tan crueles, al mediodía no obligábamos a los pobres invitados a cenar en el italiano regentado por Chucky y sus chinos-surfistas-vudú. Solo por las noches. La crueldad no estribaba en las dimensiones del local (si hasta tenían terracita) sino en que te ponían un menú de dos platos tope bestia. ¿Quién coño cena de primero unos tortellini y de segundo unos spaghetti? Aparte del menda y de Gabri, pocos lo soportaban...
Así al mediodía estuvimos haciendo la ruta gastronómica del Marqués de L'Argentera (que es la calle gorda en la que estaba la Estación de Francia que es donde se celebraba el Salón). Un día estuvimos en un sitio de esos con "Síndrome Saltarello" (Mucho plato pero poco lleno). Los muy cachondos no es que hubieran puesto el menú en español (lógico) sino que es que ni en este idioma tan simpático para mí después de días pensando en inglés, se entendía. Vamos, aún no se cómo coño se come una rúcula. En fin, les hice entender como pude a nuestros amigos extrañoparlantes qué era lo que así de primeras podía saber de forma medianamente agradable. Por supuesto: me equivoqué. Bueno, quizá solo acerté con el pobre Mark Millar, que es vegetariano y esos mientras sean hierbajos...
El día que estuvimos en el griego no lo tuve tan difícil: ¡Yo no se griego! así que para todos almorzar consistió en un arriesgado "rasca y gana" que, todo hay que decirlo, salió bien en la mayoría de las ocasiones. Aunque sigo sin saber porqué me pusieron el postre (yogur) en la ensalada. Se ve que les caí mal. A los camareros de los restaurantes griegos todo el mundo le caía mal. No os imagináis lo hábiles que eran, los muy sibilinos, para no mirarte cuando les suplicabas con la mirada que te trajesen otra botellita de agua u otro cestito de pan de pita (al que le doy un: uh uh mola sin dudarlo). También cabe la posibilidad de que confundiesen mi mirada de "¡Aaay payo traeme agua que se me disecan las vegetaciones!" con la de "Las rosas son rojas, el lirio es azúl y nadie me pone yogures como tú" que alguna gente dice que las confunden. Tendré que ensayarlas más.
El tenedor de oro se lo va a llevar el italiano del domingo. No por hacernos esperar 50 minutos de pie. Ni por pretender exponer las pieles de tres escoceses y un gallego al pleno sol de mediodía barcelonés (mariquillas). Se lo llevan por la fantabulástica PIZZA TROPECIENTOS QUESOS que nos jamamos. Bueno, Paloma (mariquilla) no se la pudo terminar, pero tranquilos, porque Vince estaba lampando y se le comió hasta los rebordes.
Al final de las comidas siempre sucedía una cosa muy graciosa: los fumadores (muchos) se atrincheraban en el extremo opuesto de la mesa para poder delectarse en su vicio. En el extremo opuesto al pobre Tim Sale, que es alérgico al tabaco. Es decir: californiano.
Bueno, en la cena del sábado también sucedió algo divertido conforme acabábamos de comer. Unos chicos musculosos y unas chicas semidesnudas empezaron a hacer ejercicios de calentamiento en las barras. Espero que el señor Eisner, encorbatado él por dignidad, no se creyese de verdad que todos los restaurantes españoles se transforman en Peep-shows a partir de las doce.
Una última anécdota. Durante nuestra Última cena (tan última que ni la pudimos acabar Gabri y yo para poder llegar al bus), se nos presentó un tipo con una gaita. No se para qué la trajo, porque por lo que oí el instrumento con el que nos deleitó fueron un gato y unas chinchetas. La madre que le parió, ¡Qué mal tocaba! Intenté hacerle entender, primero con mi mirada "Deja de tocar o me haré una gaita con tus tripas" y luego haciendo gestos con el cuchillo sobre mi cuello, que preferíamos el suave arrullo de los coches pasando que su jodido infierno acústico. Todos lo queríamos. Al final tuve que acercarme y decirle por las buenas "Por favor, para, me duele la cabeza". El desgraciado sonrió y me dijo "Yo bulgara, no se, bulgara". Búlgara su madre. Le vi llevarse la boquilla a los labios para reemprender su gran éxito, "Sinfonía horripilante", y le grité un internacional: NO de los de despeinar a un calvo. Paró. Todos me aplaudieron. Patty Bagley, again, me llamó su héroe. Pero yo solo había hecho lo que cualquier hombre debía haber hecho: contenerse y no meterle la puta gaita por el orto al individuo.
De excursión
El viernes por la mañana había programado un City Tour, que en catalán quiere decir City Tour. Como la guía era toda una profesional e iba a ir a lo suyo, era provechoso y conveniente que los asistentes acudieramos también para poder asistir a los invitados cuando se perdieran en alguna de las explicaciones que daba la buena señora en un inglés que haría que Pedro Angosto perdiese los complejos (no, no los que tiene, sino los que debería tener). Yo he viajado poco a Barcelona, creo que esta ha sido mi tercera o cuarta vez, pero el viajecito me sirvió para aprender muchas cosas nuevas: que existe un sitio donde te puedes echar unas fotos cojonudas con toda la ciudad de fondo y... y... uh... y muchas cosas sí.
Para quienes luego se quejan de bordería, me tenían que haber visto instando a los pobres de los octogenarios, que solo querían sacarse una de esas fotitos, a que corriesen o perderían el bus. Si hoy es jueves esto es Bélgica, pero en pequeñito. En la Sagrada Familia sí que tuvimos (menos mal) tiempo para ver, fotografiar, babear,... Incluso para avergonzarme de las postalitas esas que hay con bailadores de flamenco y que llevan faralaes 3D cosidas. Tuve que explicarles que, en realidad, esas postales eran turcas y que en España no teníamos nada que ver con tan curiosas manifestaciones subculturales, que era todo producto de su imaginación y tal.
Lo mejor del ensanche es pasear y poder observar los distintos edificios de arriba a abajo tranquilamente, decía la cachonda de la guía conforme el bus bajaba a toda leche la Avenida de Aragón. Retorciéndole mucho el cuello (y porque coincidió con un semáforo en rojo) conseguí que el niño de Vince lo flipara con la pedrera... Si es que el turismo en Barcelona es la ostia.

Y si no, que se lo digan a los Millar. Por aquello de que con los niños cenar tarde es un coñazo, se fueron a comer unas pizzas a un garito raro malo que había por el barrio gótico (croquetamente detrás de Santa María del Mar, aviso a navegantes). En uno de aquellos despistes, alguien agarró la bolsa de la señora de Millar y se piró del local. Con aquello de la caraja, al tipo debió de pasarsele por alto que el bolso no era el suyo. En realidad, tampoco es que hubiera nada de mucho valor, pero sí había cosas importantes: la insulina de la niña diabética y sus tests de azúcar (toma ya).
Nerviosos, volvieron al hotel, donde habíamos quedado ya que esa noche era la cena oficial de los invitados de la organización. Mark, intranquilo, no quiso dejar a su señora sola (que las desgracias vienen de dos en dos y aquella tarde ya había sufrido la pobre unas cuantas quemaduras de primer grado gracias al estupendo sol que hacía). Su amigo Vince, solícito y aún más nervioso, quería ir a buscar por los alrededores a ver si dábamos con el bolso. Y allá que nos fuimos Gabriel, él y yo, como Indianas Jones de palo, a merodear por los callejones más tétricos, meados y tortuosos que he visto en mi vida. Se podría decir que la búsqueda fue infructuosa, de no ser porque acabamos encontrandonos un total de un bolso y dos maletas, que olían a haber sido sustraídos de sus propietarios legítimos. Siguiendo con el conocimiento infuso que todos parecíamos tener sobre estos temas ("Think like a thief"), entregamos los objetos a los barrenderos no sin antes llamar, para que avisaran si alguien daba con el bolso insulinizado, a la policía.
Le encontramos al doblar una esquina, agazapado tras un contenedor de esos que se usan en las obras, nos dirigió una intranquila mirada por encima del hombro y después volvió a lo suyo. Aceleramos el paso, por si acaso. Vince había pensado que estaba con una chica (y de ahí el agazapamiento). Yo creí que estaba rebuscando en un bolso, o algo así (y de ahí el agazapamiento). Gabri seguramente pensó algo también, pero no le dió tiempo a decirlo, ya habíamos cambiado de tema.
Como rondábamos máomenos la misma zona todo el rato, volvímos a pasar dos veces por allá, donde el suspicious guy seguía quieto, o rebuscando en el contenedor. Nada normal hacía, eso desde luego (claro que eso lo digo yo que también me pasé la noche rebuscando entre contenedores y basuras apiladas).
Nos fue imposible averiguar si en aquél recoveco que ocupaba el tipo estaba la bolsa que buscábamos, porque el mamón no dejó de ocuparlo. Cansados, tras un tiempo prudencial marcado por la conciencia de que las probabilidades de dar con el bolso eran bastante superiores a una entre un millón, y por tanto inútiles, nos piramos al restaurante.
Vince se moría de hambre, tanto que no desdeñó mis ideas de volver al rincón aquél del tipo sospechoso para partirle las piernas (idea de Gabri) y comernos sus higadillos. De hecho, incluso fantaseamos sobre la posibilidad de que nos cogiese él a nosotros, nos violase y nos matase, y no necesariamente en ese orden. Sin embargo, al tío van y le dan escrúpulos de comerse una (exquisita, por otra parte) pizza casi entera que encontramos en una esquina, porque decía que no se había lavado las manos... ¿Qué otra cosa puedes esperar de un tipo que ha dibujado Los invisibles?
Así que lo primero que hicimos nada más llegar al restaurante fue irnos los tres al lavabo a lavarnos las manos. Resulta que el jodío del escocés sí que sabía catalán, o al menos se rió mucho cuando vio que nos metimos los tres juntos en un lavabo para "Homos". Salimos igual de dignos que habíamos entrado y llegábamos justo a tiempo para el segundo plato ¿Ves Vince como tenías que haberte comido esa pizza? Si te quedaste con hambre fue culpa tuya.
Hostal, sweet hostal
Nuestra tónica general fue: llegar muy tarde al hostal. Si el primer día nos perdimos por novatos, el resto debió ser por vicio, la cosa es que no dimos ni una vez con el camino más corto de vuelta al hostal. Llegábamos a las tantas y siempre con cuidado [sic] de no despertar mucho a Álex, irascible como pocos, y de no importunar demasiado las lecturas de Jona, que nos esperaba despierto porque se preocupa mucho por nosotros, o algo. A Álex no necesitábamos despertarle porque ya lo hacía el solito, se roncaba de una manera que yo no creo que fuese capaz de soportarlo ni él mismo. Entonces nosotros le hacíamos cuchicuchipús y él se giraba en la cama maldiciendonos por unas cuantas generaciones. En una de estas fue cuando se pegó tal cabezazo en la pared (sí, las camas no daban mucho de sí) que temblaron los cimientos de todo el edificio. Delicado yo, le susurré "¿Álex, estás bien?" y él, tan salao como siempre, me tranquilizó, susurrándome: "Si ya no me puedes despertar, ¿por qué hablas así, gilipollas?" ¡Sí! El viejo Álex estaba sano y salvo, el tremebundo golpe no había afectado a su neurona socarrona.
Lo de por las mañanas sí que le debía afectar más. Yo, adicto al colchón como el que más, cometía la imprudencia de dejar a Gabri que fuese él el primero en ocupar el baño, y claro, el señorito tiene la costumbre de echarse el cigarrito cagando antes de la ducha. Aquello era inenarrable cuando el malnacido habría la puerta. Álex asustado se metía bajo las mantas gritando "¡El horror!", Jónatan, precavido, seguía leyendo tranquilamente y sonriendo a traves de la mascarilla antigás con esa cara suya de "Ya os lo dije". Oíamos los gritos del morochino de recepción intentando coordinar la evacuación. Las alemanitas borrachas del pasillo, resacosas, chillaban aterradas escaleras abajo; los franceses reconocieron el olor a queso de su compatriota, así que le insultaban en francés. En aquella alucinatoria vorágine, hasta creí ver a un gitano espigado vestido de blanco saltar por el patio de luces, rebotando en las balaustradas y gritando "A mí no me pillarás, neumonía antipática".
Y después de eso: yo. Yo tenía que entrar AHÍ a ducharme. No me resultaba demasiado difícil gracias a la nunca bien ponderada ayuda de la congestión nasal que me provocaba la polución barcelonesa. Pero comprenderéis que después de mis abluciones y canturreos obviase actos tan inútiles como echarme Axe... ¿Pa qué?.
Farewell
El domingo, conforme amainaba el ajetreo, iban levantándose las olas de la emotividad. Me gusta, no voy a negarlo, que las dedicatorias de los dibujitos que al final opté por pedir en mi sketchbook sean todas de agradecimiento. Sí, me sentí un poquito más feliz de saber que durante esos cinco días de trabajo había conseguido hacerlo, medianamente, bien. Al final tenía que pasarme algo así, supongo. Cuando salía para acompañar por última vez al señor Eisner y a su editor hacia el hotel, el buen hombre pidió un momento, papel y lápiz y tuvo un, me gusta pensar que lo es, estupendo gesto de gratitud. Me dibujó (¡A mí!) un Spirit. Ni siquiera le había pedido una firma porque siempre que le recogía de las sesiones le veía tan cansado que me daba mucho reparo. Según me contaron, hace años que no le hace un dibujito a nadie. A mí me da igual: el mío me daba las gracias. Como el capi que me dedicó Sal Buscema, o la bestia de Vince. ¡¡¡Cielos, le he cogido cariño a esta gente!!! Y por los abrazos que nos dieron el domingo cuando nos íbamos, y sus despedidas, un poco ellos también a nosotros.
